Feeling SAD in Alaska

When the seasons change, so can your mood. Depression, low energy levels, weight gain and social isolation are just some of the symptoms that come along with seasonal variations. If some of these signs point to you, you could be experiencing SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and if you reside in Alaska, SAD is even more common.
Although Alaska has the same amount of daylight and darkness during the course of the year as anywhere else on earth, it is distributed differently. During the winter, the days in Alaska are much shorter and above the Arctic Circle, nighttime can last for months! In the same region, daylight in the summertime is similar. Just imagine attempting to sleep at night in the bright sun!

Being that there is such a variation of light due to the changing seasons, many Alaskans experience SAD; however, there is help.
Phototherapy, often referred to as light therapy is one method of aiding this ailment. During a light therapy session, one will sit near a light box for at least a half of an hour.  According to studies, most patients show improvement within 2-4 days!
If sitting in front of a light box for 30 minutes can bring about such a positive outcome, imagine obtaining the same benefits without have to take time any time out of your day?
By replacing existing light bulbs in your home or office with OttLite bulbs, one can experience the same effects with the advantage of not being confined to one area!
OttLite illumination mimics the sunlight and sufficient evidence suggests that the full spectrum lighting an OttLite bulb emits has similar benefits to a light box.
So, Alaska, instead of living with SAD, why not light up your whole home with the natural, healthy benefits of an OttLite?

Inspired by Nature: OttLite Bulbs

Whether you may think about it or not, nature inspires us in many ways. From architecture to the colors in a box of crayons, the elements of nature are present. Just take a moment to look around and you’ll more than likely find at least one or two objects that have a link to nature in the room you’re in right now!

When it comes to lighting, OttLite bulbs are inspired by nature, in more ways than one. The light radiated from the bulbs emit just the right balance and contrast to bring out life’s most vivid and natural colors and all OttLite bulbs  meet 2012 EISA (Energy Independence and Security Act) requirements now.

What is the EISA?
The EISA is an act put into play by congress to improve the efficiency standards of basic light bulbs beginning in Jan. 2012. These standards will require newly manufactured bulbs to be 25 percent more effective in conserving energy. In terms of saving money, according to the U.S. department of Energy, exchanging 15 incandescent bulbs, could save about $50 per year. That is definitely thinking about nature in terms of conservation!  (Source: http://1.usa.gov/n6pLdG)

In regards to Mother Nature, OttLite bulbs are developed by Dr. John Ott, an award winner at the Garden Club of America. Ott’s creation is ideal for indoor plants. His light bulbs provide the benefits of natural daylight and will display greenery in true color. Another benefit to indoor planting with an OttLite bulb is the heat –factor. An OttLite will not wilt blooms or dry out soil.

Tips for Living with Better Quality Lighting

Since light is an essential to our nature and is utilized in a large portion our daily activity, why not take advantage of the best lighting we can get?  Unbeknownst to many, poor quality lighting can have a negative effect on our mood when we work, play and relax.  Dim or reduced illumination can cause sluggishness where too much brightness can cause aggravation and possible headaches. Instead of living with an inferior glow, here are some tips to help obtain the best quality lighting possible.

·         If not in natural lighting or in an outdoor environment, always have a lamp nearby when reading.

·         For ample illumination at a lower wattage, try a florescent light.

·         Adding LED lights can reduce glare when it comes to doing tasks up close.

·         Try pendant lighting to provide a stylish flair while adding extra illumination.

·         For natural lighting, change your old light bulb for an OttLite High Definition bulb.

·         Add under fixtures under cabinets to make food preparation easier on your eyes.

·         Light up a bookshelf, prized painting or figurines with track, rail or recessed lighting.

·         Add a chandelier or a pendant light over a dinner or dining room table. Lower the light for ambient dining or brighten it up for table games or tasks.

Useful Tip Friday: Reusing and Recycling Light Bulbs

Hooray, it’s Friday! Since it’s just about time for the weekend, how about starting it off with some useful tips?

If you just bought a brand new set of OttLite bulbs and need some bright ideas about what to do with your old blubs, today’s useful tips may help.

1. Have some fun with arts and crafts.

My grandmother was a wiz when it came to arts and crafts. She once took a used light bulb and affixed it to an old-fashioned coke bottle. She then spray-painted the whole arrangement gold and added an orange vest and tail to the coke bottle. On the light bulb portion, she fashioned pointy, orange ears made out of felt and painted a cat-face on the front. What a purr-fectly good idea! Want to see some other nifty light bulb creations? Check out this link: http://bit.ly/5bLCZi

2. Donate them to a shelter or organization.

Shelters and local charities are always open to donations. If they can’t use an item, they usually can find someone who will.

3. Check with your local recycling center.

Some recycling centers will recycle them and others won’t. Just give them a quick call or check your town’s local garbage pick-up website for details.

Here's to a bright weekend!
